Tradition

The women's squash program at Yale has become one of the finest in the nation. Since the program began in 1972-73, the Elis have only finished lower than fourth in the country four times. Last season the Bulldogs went undefeated for the second consecutive year, winning the national, Ivy League and Howe Cup championships, to add another chapter to the history of squash at Yale.

The varsity program was launched under the guidance of coach Bill Ewen, who led Yale to a second-place finish nationally in 1975-76. Yale's second coach, Marion Freeman, guided Yale to a national championship in 1976-77 and to second-place rankings in 1977-78 and 1979-80. The Elis won their first Howe Cup championship in 1977.

The outstanding tradition continued under the leadership of Dale Walker, who retired at the end of the 1997-98 season after 18 years at the helm. During Walker's tenure, the Elis captured three national titles (1983, 1986 and 1992), won 76 percent of their matches and had numerous players selected to the All-Ivy League team. Mark Talbott followed Walker and led the Bulldogs to an undefeated season and another national championship in 2003-04. In 2004, Dave Talbott took control of the team, coaching it to its second straight national championship.

Yale squash players have also enjoyed individual success, earning top 10 rankings nationally. Berkeley Belknap '92 is one of only 13 players in Ivy League squash to have earned All-Ivy honors four consecutive years. Belknap also captured the national intercollegiate title in 1991. In 2003, Michelle Quibell '06 became the first Yale player to be named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year. She followed that up by being named Ivy League Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005, earning the individual national title in both years as well. Quibell, Amy Gross '06 and Catherine McLeod '07 were all named first team All-Ivy and All-American in 2004 and repeated that accomplishment in 2005, with newcomer Miranda Ranieri joining them on the All-Ivy squad.
