WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Freshman Justin Ankney hit home runs in each game, but Yale still lost a doubleheader to Albany at Yale Field. The Great Danes (11-3) scored three unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning of the opener to win 3-1 and then banged out 11 hits in a 10-5 victory in Game 2.
In the first game, Ankney broke a scoreless tie with a solo homer to right field leading off the sixth inning. Albany, though, loaded the bases in the seventh with two out and scored two runs on an error. Dan Schoonmaker followed with an RBI single to make it 3-1. Yale had the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh, but Shawn Ryan worked out of the jam to earn his fifth save of the year.
Alec Smith was the hard-luck loser for Yale. He pitched 6.2 innings, did not allow an earned run and struck out nine. Albany starter Adam Krost limited the Bulldogs to four hits in six innings. He struck out six.
In the second game, Brendan Chiavaro went 2 for 3 with four RBI to lead Albany. Freshman Jake Doyle had two hits for the Bulldogs (5-8). Trailing 5-0, Yale scored three times in the second. Eric Rasmussen knocked in two runs with a single to centerfield, and C.J. Orrico followed with a sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs scored their final two runs in the fifth. Zac Bradley reached on error and scored on Ankney's second homer of the day.
The same two teams play another doubleheader at Yale Field on Sunday.
