Chris Murphy Memorial Regatta Photo Gallery
Branford, Conn. - The Yale Sailing Team hosted the Chris Murphy Memorial Regatta alumni event on Saturday, May 17 at the McNay Family Sailing Center. The regatta, which included both alumni and current Yale sailors, featured seven races along with a lunch and dinner for all the attendees.
The racing was held in warm and sunny conditions that allowed for exciting racing because of the strong winds. The first four races, which were held in the morning, featured a shifty and puffy northerly breeze of between 10 to 16 knots with higher puffs. In the afternoon, the wind shifted to the south and brought with it large, rolling waves that allowed the competitors to test their skills at surfing down the waves. The wind varied in strength in the afternoon, with gusts as high as 16 knots and lulls as low as four knots, with an average wind of eight to 14 knots.
Placing first overall in the regatta was the undergraduate team of senior Zachary Brown, freshman Blair Belling and Chris Hanson `05 with 22 points. In second was the combination of sophomore captain Thomas Barrows and junior Caleb Dorfman with 28 points while the team of coaches Zachary Leonard '89 and Bill Healy, current Yale sailors junior Jane Macky and sophomore John Kempton and Yale graduate Hannah Oakland '07 placed third with 40 points. Since the regatta and the Chris Murphy Memorial Regatta Trophy can only be officially won by teams skippered by Yale alumni, the top honors went to Ted Ferrarone '98 and crew Karl Siebert, who placed fourth overall with 41 points. Ferrarone and Siebert were very consistent, finishing in the top five in five of the seven races.
The regatta featured one of the largest turnouts in recent years, with 17 boats of alumni and undergraduates on the starting line. In addition, two Yale alumni who did not compete, Michael Huang and Elizabeth McCance, participated in the post-racing dinner along with their families. The class of 2007 was especially well represented, with five of the seven members of the graduating class returning for the regatta.
The Bulldog women's sailing team is back in action on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at the ICSA Women's National Championships while the coed sailing team will compete on June 2-4 at the ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy National Championships. Both events will take place in Newport, R.I.
