Welcome
to Yale University's
National Youth Sports Program
NYSP
HISTORY:
In
1968, representatives of the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA) and the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports
piloted the NYSP concept during the summer at two university athletics
facilities.
On
March 17, 1969, the White House announced that the federal government
was committing $3 million to establish a sports program for economically
disadvantaged youth. The federal grant has significantly increased to
$15 million since then, and strong congressional support remains for
NYSP objectives.
NYSP
is a partnership between the federal government, represented by the US
Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the nation's colleges
and universities, acting through the NCAA. Local support from within the
communities of NYSP also helps make the program prosper.
The National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) has created positive
opportunities for youth in at-risk environments for close to 40 years.
Since 1969, NYSP has served youth between the ages of 9 and 16 through
an organized program of sport skills and life instruction. NYSP has been
conducted on the campuses of over 200 colleges and universities and
served over 78,000 young people. NYSP has made an unprecedented effort
to combine the promotion of athletic know-how and life skills that can
assist participants in making a successful transition to adulthood
through positive youth development.
NYSP AT
YALE:
The NYSP at Yale, founded in 1996, enrolls close to 350 local youth in
the program run by more than 75 staff members, including Yale
student-athletes, local high school students, New Haven schoolteachers
and coaches, and Yale staff. The program utilizes Yale Athletics
facilities for all activities and the Hall of Graduate Studies dining
